Into The Wild was definitely a better movie in the sense that it keeps you immersed in his entire journey. It was such a tragic ending, but it's exactly because of that I like the way they seem to "glorify" his adventure. It allows me to immerse myself into this character and how he probably experience his journey. For instance, the scenes where he was hiking alone seemed so inspiring, so liberating, it looks like it definitely feel good to be out like that in the wild alone. Which somehow makes us truly understand why he chose to be in the wild alone. How happy it can be. Then he gets skinnier towards the end, and ate that poisonous plant and grew weaker and weaker. And at the end when he wrote that happiness is only real when shared, in addition to the physical agony he was experiencing, you can just imagine how he take his health for granted when he decided to relinquish all his possession and lived off nature. Not to mention they have on of the best original soundtracks!
As for Wild, it seems that she only had the revelation at the end, sort of a eureka moment. It seems that she was just forcing her way through the trail because she feels she needs to do it. Unlike Chris, Cheryl's purpose of the journey was the end of the road. That's what I get from watching the movie, I've not read the book, so I couldn't know for sure either. That being said, I thought the movie could include better scenes which would allow me to empathise more with the character through out her journey. The flash backs didn't help much because it seems to me like it's only additional information, not in a helpful sense, they seem to be highlighting the same issues over an over again. I get that sometimes, something along the way reminded her of the past, and retrospectively she gains new perspective, but the built up just wasn't gradual enough. She was at the end of the journey and she suddenly figured it all out. It still seems a bit out of the blue. Yes there were the flash backs, and those quotes she left on the log. But overall it just didn't make much sense how it leads to what she said at the end.
